Carl M. Herbert M.D.

Fertility Doctor & Infertility Specialist: Dr. Carl HerbertIn 1982, Carl Herbert, MD was instrumental in the development of one of the first assisted reproductive technology programs in the United States at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is an internationally recognized fertility specialist who has been performing in-vitro fertilization longer than any other physician in the Bay Area. He is Board Certified by The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Dr. Herbert is a third-generation physician who earned his MD degree in 1978 from the University of Florida, Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed both a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Herbert joined the Vanderbilt teaching faculty upon completion of his fellowship and served as the Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology Division from 1989-90. He is an accomplished clinical researcher and author of numerous articles and chapters for professional medical publications.

In 1990 Dr. Herbert was recruited by Pacific Fertility Center to join the San Francisco clinic where he eventually became the Medical Director. Wanting to establish a uniquely independent practice, Dr. Herbert subsequently joined the San Francisco Center for Reproductive Medicine (SFCRM) as a partner and became the Medical Director.

Under Dr. Herbert's stewardship, SFCRM became a leading center for infertility care and assisted reproductive technology services. His leadership in the community was recognized in 1996 when he was appointed Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at California Pacific Medical Center where he continues to serve as the division director.

Dr. Herbert, along with his partners, purchased and took over the management of Pacific Fertility Center in November of 1999. He is the President of the merged practices known as Pacific Fertility Center.

Dr. Herbert is dedicated to practicing medicine in a caring and highly ethical manner. He continues to be involved with reproductive research and maintains an active interest in the ethical dilemmas confronting reproductive technologists in the 21st century. He served as 2002-3 President of the Society For Humanism in Medicine and spearheaded their CME program "The Human Embryo: Issues Surrounding the Beginning of Life."

Dr. Herbert also has his own blog through healthline.com, a health-information website. Various topics will be posted on the blog, providing a forum for the public to communicate with Dr. Herbert. We encourage you to visit his blog to learn more.

He has repeatedly been singled out by his peers in two national surveys "Best Doctors in the Bay Area" by San Francisco Magazine and "Guide to Top Doctors" by Consumers' Checkbook.
