Carolyn R. Givens M.D.

Fertility Doctor & Infertility Specialist: Dr. Carolyn R. Givens M.D. Dr. Carolyn Givens was the first in San Francisco to successfully initiate a pregnancy using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). She has worked with thousands of in vitro fertilization patients over the last decade using a combination of attentive, personal care and advanced medical technology. Dr. Givens has developed a special interest in treating couples with more challenging infertility diagnoses including male infertility, women with diminished ovarian reserve, women over 40, and those with genetic problems associated with infertility. She is Board-Certified by The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility with extensive experience in helping couples overcome infertility.

Dr. Givens received her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1986 and served a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Parkland Memorial Hospital from 1986 to 1990. Dr. Givens moved from Dallas to San Francisco in 1990 to continue her training at UCSF. Upon completion of her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of California, San Francisco, she was appointed to the medical school faculty.

During her seven years at the University of California, San Francisco, she developed particular expertise in severe male factor infertility and genetic problems associated with infertility. Dr. Givens was concurrently a full-time clinician with the UCSF In Vitro Fertilization Program and an Assistant Professor of the UCSF Medical School. As a faculty member she focused on infertility patient therapy, while training other infertility specialists. In 1994, she was involved in a medical breakthrough for male infertility when one of her patients became pregnant with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) fertilization. Although her career has focused on IVF, she is a skilled practitioner of all aspects of infertility care including physician-assisted ovulation induction and surgical procedures such as laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Dr. Givens is an accomplished clinical researcher and author of numerous articles for professional journals.

In November of 1999, Dr. Givens joined forces with Dr.s Herbert, Chenette and Schriock and purchased Pacific Fertility Center and became a member of the merged practices known as Pacific Fertility Center®. She currently co-directs the Bay Area Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis Program (PGD) and directs Pacific Fertility Center’s PGD Program.

She has been singled out by San Francisco Magazine in their "Best Doctors in the Bay Area" and by her peers in national surveys. Dr. Givens serves on the Board of the Pacific Coast Reproductive Society, 2000-present, remains actively involved in the San Francisco Ob/Gyn Society and serves as a reviewer for the Journals Fertility and Sterility, Endocrinology and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
