Pacific Fertility Center Reports on Results of Embryo Study at ASRM Meeting
- In the first study of its kind, Pacific Fertility Center reports that extending the culture of embryos to day 7 increases the number of normal (euploid) embryos available for future pregnancy attempts. Entitled Extended culture to day 7 increases euploid embryo yield per IVF cycle, the report was presented by PFC on Wednesday, October 22, at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) in Honolulu, HI.
This study compared the chromosomal makeup of sibling embryos- those retrieved from a woman during the same cycle - which developed to day 5 (D5), day 6 (D6) and day 7 (D7) from patients in all age groups, said Sergio Vaccari, PhD, lead author and senior embryologist at PFC. The process, Comprehensive Chromosome Screening (CCS), was done by harmlessly removing a few cells from each embryo (biopsying) and examining their chromosome number using SNP microarray analysis. This technique identifies embryos with 46 chromosomes (euploid embryos) and therefore those with the potential for normal development.
In the 66 IVF cycles involving embryo biopsy, 27 (40%) included at least one D7 biopsy. Of the biopsied embryos, 42/157 (27%) were D7 and 21/42 (50%) were euploid. The researchers observed more D7 embryo development in older women perhaps demonstrating slower embryo growth on the basis of age. The addition of more euploid embryos for future transfer may increase the eventual success for these women.
All embryos in the study were frozen (vitrified) immediately after biopsy. When the researchers warm embryos for transfer, they will evaluate rates of implantation and live births.
