Genetic Screening Technique Produces Very High Pregnancy Rates with Very Low Risks at Pacific Fertility Center

here.

San Francisco, CA – November 12, 2013 – A new genetic screening technique, Comprehensive Chromosome Screening (CCS) is producing very high pregnancy rates with low risks of miscarriage, multiple gestation, and Down syndrome, reports PFC’s Philip Chenette, MD. With the help of CCS, in fact, three out of four embryo transfers in 2012 resulted in a pregnancy at PFC—most with the transfer of only one embryo.

CCS is a way to identify embryos with normal chromosomes before an embryo is transferred and implants in a woman’s uterus. A vast improvement over prior approaches, CCS is a highly sensitive technique that tests all 23 pairs of an embryo’s chromosomes at a later stage of development than previously done. This makes it possible to reliably and safely count the exact number of chromosomes, to spot embryos of poor quality, and to select the highest-quality embryo out of a group for transfer to the woman’s uterus.

In the video, Dr. Chenette explains how PFC has invested six years of research and development to provide a combination of new technologies to identify the embryo with the greatest chance of success. Along with CCS, for example, time-lapse imaging and extended culture—allowing the embryo to incubate longer—make IVF a very different experience than in the past. Now, it is highly possible to transfer a single embryo, yet achieve a successful pregnancy to produce families, one healthy baby at a time.
