What is in vitro fertilization (IVF)?

The term “in vitro,” derived from the Latin meaning “in glass,” encapsulates the essence of IVF, signifying fertilization occurring outside of the human body. In this process, the union of eggs and sperm takes place within a controlled laboratory environment.

When is IVF recommended?

IVF is considered to be one of the most efficient forms of fertility treatment, usually providing the highest rates of successful conception. IVF is often recommended or necessary for older patients, as well as patients who have:

  • Reproductive disorders or structural abnormalities
  • Severe male factor infertility
  • Not had success with other treatments, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or medications
  • Unexplained infertility

IVF is also often necessary for third-party reproduction, such as egg donation and gestational surrogacy.

How IVF Works

During the IVF process, a patient's natural cycle is carefully manipulated through the use of fertility medications. These medications stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. At the right time, the eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized using sperm from a partner or donor. At the proper time, the embryos are transferred into the woman's uterus.
