Celebrity Egg Freezing

In the recent past, several celebrities have either frozen their eggs or expressed that they were considering it. Each has come to the decision for very different reasons, but all have been vocal about how they've arrived at this crossroads.

Sofía Vergara

Hoping to expand her family with fiancé Nicholas Loeb, the Modern Family actress chose to freeze her eggs at age 40. (The two have since split.)

Vergara has a son in his 20s from a previous marriage. "I'm 40 years old now," Vergara told Dr. Oz. "Things don't happen naturally anymore so I've been very concerned about fertility and I wanted to take advantage of science."

Maria Menounos

The Extra co-host announced her plans to freeze her eggs on Dr. Drew's Lifechangers in 2011. On Good Morning America, she said, "To me, parenting is the most difficult job in the entire world, and when I do it, I want to be committed, and I want to be 100 percent ready to take it on and to be the best mom I can be. Right now, I don't find myself to be in that position."

In 2012, Menounos relayed her emotional journey to freeze her eggs on Dr. Drew's Lifechangers, but it is unknown if she proceeded with treatment.

Joanna Krupa

The model and Real Housewives of Miami star is the most recent celebrity to announce her plans to freeze her eggs. Although Krupa, 35, is recently married, she said she and her husband are not ready to have children quite yet. "He was all for it. We're not ready to have kids at this moment, and I think it's just safe to have a little security blanket," she told People Magazine.

Krupa said, "I don't want to regret [not doing it] two, three years down the line, when I'm trying to have kids, in case for some reason I would be infertile. I would never forgive myself."

Kim Kardashian

In 2012, Kardashian decided to freeze her eggs, and announced it on her family's television show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians. In one of the episodes, Kardashian said, "I'm glad that I'm freezing my eggs. I think now I can just be proactive, but I want to make sure when the time is right I want to be prepared. I should be safe."

Kardashian told Elle UK, just as she was to freeze her eggs, she found out she was pregnant with North.

Whitney Bischoff

Season 19 Bachelor fiancée Whitney Bischoff discusses her decision to freeze her eggs at age 27 in an interview with Good Morning America. Bischoff, a fertility nurse in Chicago, said, "I just felt like it would be silly for me not to take the opportunity when it was handed to me."

Bischoff, who is now engaged to Bachelor star Chris Soules, said she hears patients every day say "I just wish I would've known. I wish someone would've told me." Bischoff hopes she never has to use her frozen eggs, but said, "I would tell any woman to do it. I feel like by just taking the lead and taking control of my body and my fertility, it checked off a lot of boxes for me."

Fran Drescher

The Nanny star Fran Drescher became an advocate for improving women's healthcare after she was misdiagnosed and mistreated for what doctors said was a perimenopausal condition. What she had instead was uterine cancer. After undergoing a radical hysterectomy in 2000, she opted to freeze her ovaries. At the time, the technology of egg freezing was relatively new and experimental. Drescher told Good Medicine, "I wanted to freeze my ovaries, so I could harvest the eggs and have a biological child through a surrogate." Since that time, the technology for freezing eggs and embryos, known as vitrification, has become successful.

Coco Austin

The star of Ice Loves Coco and wife of Ice-T Marrow expressed her desire to freeze her eggs at the end of 2012. Austin told The Today Show, "Right now I have so much going on in my career, and I am being pressured by family and friends and just everybody to have a little one…. It might be a good option to have down the road...." It is unknown whether she decided to proceed with treatment.
